How to Pick a Sweet, Ripe Watermelon

Choosing a good watermelon can feel like a guessing game, but a few visible clues can help you avoid one that is underripe, bland, or past its best.
Dark, dull skin – A watermelon with a deeper, less shiny surface is generally a better sign of maturity than one that looks very bright and glossy.
Lots of webbing – Brownish web-like marks on the rind are often associated with sweeter fruit and are commonly looked for when choosing a watermelon.
A creamy yellow to orange field spot – The patch where the watermelon rested on the ground should ideally be creamy yellow. A very pale or white spot can indicate that it was harvested too early.
